"I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times, as it has been a very rough and sad year for me," Michael told the publication.

"I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts as it will not be easy, but one thing that both my parents taught me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that."

D'Angelo's family confirmed in a statement that the singer, known for his songs like Brown Sugar and Lady, died following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 51.

D'Angelo's death comes months after Angie Stone, Michael's mother and D'Angelo's ex, died.

Stone, who rose to prominence in the 1970s as a member of the female rap group The Sequence, died in a car crash in March, aged 63.

According to USA Today, the incident occurred as she was travelling with members of her band from Alabama to Atlanta when their van collided with a semi-trailer truck.

D'Angelo began dating Stone in the mid 90s after they met working on his debut album Brown Sugar.

In 1997 Stone welcomed their son before she and D'Angelo in 1999.
