First look at Michael J Fox's return to acting five years after announcing his retirement

Michael J Fox is returning to screens five years after stepping away from acting.

The season 3 trailer for Apple TV+'s Shrinking teases the star's comeback after he stopped acting in 2020 due to speech issues associated with his Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

The first look at the new season, which was released on December 31 in Australia, shows Fox, 64, sitting beside Dr Paul Rhoades – played by Harrison Ford – in the waiting room of a medical centre.

"What are you in for?" Fox's character asks Paul.

He replies, "Parkinson's. You?" to which Fox quips, "Just a haircut," and the pair share a laugh.

Ford's character in Shrinking has had Parkinson's since Season 1, though he initially tries to conceal it and the severity of his symptoms. But over time he is forced to tackle the disease head-on and come to terms with it.

Shrinking follows Jason Segel as Jimmy Laird, a grieving therapist mourning his wife by telling his clients what he really thinks and causing trouble. There to help clean up the mess is Ford's character.

Fox's casting in the series was announced in May, and it also sees him reunite with series co-creator Bill Lawrence.

Fox was the star of Lawrence's ABC sitcom Spin City for four seasons until he left the show in 2000 because of Parkinson's-related issues.

He also worked with Lawrence on Scrubs, in which he had a memorable guest arc.

When it was announced earlier this year that he would be coming out of retirement for the role on Shrinking, fans were thrilled by the fact two '80s icons would be sharing the screen.

Fox made his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease public in 1998 after being diagnosed in 1991.

He has since founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000 to help fund research, which it continues to do today.
