The Naked Gun and Father of the Bride actor Ed Williams dies, aged 98

American actor Ed Williams, known for his roles in the oriringal The Naked Gun movies and Father of the Bride among others has died. He was 98.

The actor, who had also worked previosly as a broadcasting teacher, died on Thursday 2 October in Los Angeles, his daughter Stephanie Williams confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Williams was born in San Jose, California on November 26, 1926.

After studyinig acting and starring in a number of plays, he changed tack and started his career as a broadcasting and speech teacher at a college in Los Angeles before retiring and pursuing acting lessons.

Those acting lessons, with the help of some contacts, catapulted him into some memorable roles and a second career as a screen actor.

His first onscreen role was as Mr Ted Olson in the popular American sitcom Police Squad!

He starred in all six episodes of the show's one season run.

Later, Williams reprised the role of Ted Olson for the original The Naked Gun movies.

In 1991, the actor starred alongside Steve Martin, Martin Short and the late Diane Keaton in Father of the Bride.

He starred as the reverend in the film who married Annie Banks (Kimberly Wililams) and Bryan MacKenzie (George Newbern) in the popular film.

Those two roles aside, he took on a number of film and TV roles.

In the '80s those included Madame's Place, MacGyver and Matlock.

His acting career then progressed through the '90s and into the early 2000s

He appeared in the 1990 movie The Giant of Thunder Mountain and the 1992 movie High Strung.

He also took on minor roles in well known TV series including The Bold and the Beautiful and the medical TV series House. 

His last acing role, according to his IMDB profile, was a five-episode stint in the TV series Hollywood Radio Players between 2022 and 2023.

Having started out as an actor in his 50s, Williams second career on the screen spanned four decades.

Williams is survived by his wife Nancy whom he married in 1954, two sons and his grandchildren.
