'It can kill you': Madonna reveals cause of 2023 intensive care stay that almost cost her life

Two years after she spent four days in intensive care fighting for her life, Madonna has revealed the cause of her hospitalisation.

The pop superstar and mother-of-six children, including four she adopted, appeared on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast overnight when attention turned to the cause of her 2023 hospitalisation.

"I was rehearsing for a tour, and I got a bacterial infection," she explained to Shetty. 

"One minute I was alive and dancing around and the next minute I was in the ICU, unconscious for four days.

"I got out of hospital, they took me off the ventilator, I started to breathe on my own, and I had something called sepsis, and it can kill you."

According to Healthdirect, sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body's extreme response to an infection.

Symptoms include fast breathing, fever, confusion, severe pain, discoloured skin and drowsiness.

Sepsis can lead to septic shock, organ failure or death if not treated quickly, and usually requires intensive care treatment unit.

Madonna said that after her stint in intensive care she assumed she would recover quickly, but was wrong. 

"Everybody recovers at a different rate, and I've always seen myself as Superwoman," she said. 

"So I was like, 'Oh I'm going to kick this. I'm going to be good, I'm getting back into rehearsal', but I had no strength, no energy, couldn't get out of bed and I didn't know when it was gonna end."

Madonna was in the midst of preparations for The Celebration Tour, which was meant to kick off in July 2023, when she fell ill, causing the postponement of her US shows.

The tour eventually began with its planned European dates in October 2023, with some of the US shows rescheduled while others were cancelled.

Elsewhere in the interview, Shetty asked Madonna why she had agreed to the interview.

"In the past, I have usually done interviews to promote my work, whether that is music or a tour, or film, but today I would like to talk about my spiritual life and the spiritual path that I have been on for over 28 years," she said.

"This wisdom has helped me navigate the ups and downs of life...

"I feel like I am here to share that with people.

"I am not here to promote a product... I just want to share something with people that has pretty much saved my life."

Madonna said she first started studying Kabbalah in 1996 when she was pregnant with her first child, daughter Lourdes, her child with Carlos Leon.

"I had everything that people would assume would give you happiness. I had a successful career, I had fame, fortune, monetary things, physical things, but I wasn't happy."

She said her spiritual life had helped her find peace in a "very busy, chaotic world".

Elsewhere in the interview, she said she did not believe anything that happened in life was random.

"I don't believe anything is random. I think everything that happens to us is meant to happen to us to teach us some kind of lesson.

''I've had a pretty challenging life and it is easy to fall into the trap of feeling sorry for yourself or like being a victim.

"I was held up at gunpoint, I was robbed, I was raped; all these horrendous things happened to me but I just feel like I always had a guardian angel...

"The universe was protecting me and looking out for me."
