Why Leonardo DiCaprio says he's 'emotionally 35' as he reflects on turning 50

Leonardo DiCaprio is really leaning into the old 'you're only as old as you feel' belief.

The 50-year-old actor opened up about how he really feels about his age in an interview with Esquire for the Mavericks of Hollywood Issue

Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of his new movie One Battle After Another, asked "If you didn't know how old you are, how old are you right now?"

Leonardo DiCaprio during the opening ceremony at the 78th annual Cannes Film Festival at Grand Theatre Lumiere on May 13, 2025 in Cannes, France.

The questions were coming rapid fire for DiCaprio, who was instructed to answer as quickly as he could and he had a surprising response.

"Thirty-two," he said.

The Oscar winner celebrated his milestone 50th birthday in November 2024, but doesn't feel like that really reflects his age, instead admitted that he feels more like he turned "emotionally 35".

DiCaprio was also asked if turning 50 had made him reflect on his life.

"Well, it creates a feeling like you have a desire to just be more honest and not waste your time," he said.

"I can only imagine how the next few decades are going to progress."

For him this includes "being more upfront and risking having things fall apart or risk the disagreements or risk going your separate ways from any type of relationship in life – the personal, professional".

As he summed it up, just not wanting to waste your time.

When it comes to Hollywood, he's had quite the career and it's no surprise that in that time he's learnt when being upfront matters.

He kicked things off with a few roles on television in the 1980s before hitting it big with What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993, which also earned him his first Oscar nomination at just 19.

In the years since he's been nominated six more times, and won once in the Best Actor category.

He nabbed the top gong for his role playing Alejandro G. Iñárritu's 2015 Western epic The Revenant.
