'A loud absence': Valerie Bertinelli's rare tribute to late rocker ex-husband Eddie Van Halen

Valerie Bertinelli has shared a rare tribute to her late ex-husband Eddie Van Halen with whom she shares a son.

"Some days I really do miss you," the 65-year-old actress and TV personality wrote in a heartfelt post on Instagram to the late rocker.

"There will always be a loud absence in these gratifying sideline years."

Bertinelli and Van Halen married in 1981 and were a well-known It couple of the early 1980s. They welcomed their son Wolfgang Van Halen in 1991 before separating in 2007.

The musician, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in rock history, died in 2020 after battling tongue, throat and eventually lung cancer.

Bertinelli shared her tribute alongside a black and white photo of herself and Van Halen embracing each other.

"Who do I yap to when there was really only one person I could talk to about Wolfie the way we did?" she continued.

"The pride we both felt. Still feel. I'm grateful for where we landed. Through the ups and the downs to still alight where we did is a blessing."

Van Halen and Bertinelli divorced in 2007 citing irreconcilable differences.

Despite their separation, the couple maintained a close bond for the rest of Van Halen's life.

Their son, now 34, has followed in his dad's footsteps becoming a musician himself.

"You'd be so proud of Wolf. I know we'd be screaming together in the stands watching him on stage," Bertinelli continued in her tribute.

"Seeing who could whistle the loudest. I will never not miss being able to experience that with you."

After their separation, Bertinelli went on to marry her second husband, financial planner Tom Vitale. They were married from 2011 until 2022.

Van Halen also went on to remarry Jane Liszewski. They were married from 2009 until his death in 2020.

Bertinelli first rose to prominence as a child star on the long-running US sitcom One Day at a Time.

After making the jump to become an actress as an adult through TV shows such as Touched by an Angel and Hot in Cleveland, she later reinvented herself as a TV host with her own cooking shows and more recently as a lifestyle expert on The Drew Barrymore Show.

She is also known to share a very strong relationship with Wolfgang, whom she has described as "the best thing that ever happened to me." So close in fact that Bertinelli's Instagram handle is @wolfiesmom.

Bertinelli reportedly has a net worth of about $AUD30 million and lives in Los Angeles, not far from her son and his wife of one year Andraia Allsop.
