Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz speaks out on claims about his memory loss

Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz has addressed a worrying misconception about his memory.

Muniz, 40, a former child star who played the title character in the popular sitcom for seven seasons from 2000 to 2006, previously said he was battling from memory problems after suffering a mini stroke and a series of concussions.

But now years after first making the revelations about his health in interviews, Muniz has walked back the comments during an appearance overnight on the Inside of You podcast.

Frankie Muniz speaks about his memory problems during an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast.

"Just to bring up the memory thing a little bit, almost to clear the air a little bit," Muniz told host Michael Rosenbaum.

"The story of that was kind of taken out of context in a sense. I have, not memory issues, I have a bad memory.

"And I've thought, now that all these crazy stories have come out, where people are like, 'You don't even know your wife'.

"I just have a bad memory."

He continued: "I can memorise lines, I have a good memory [in that regard].

"I equate it to this: After years of trying to figure out why I don't absorb so many things.

"Well, A. Since I was eight years old, I have been non-stop doing things, flying here and doing that and just crazy cool things...

"And then I've also been an actor my whole life, where every single day, I'm pretending to be somebody else and having somebody else's emotions and somebody's happiness or somebody's sadness, anger or someone's love interest and all these things.

"They say 'cut' when you're done with the scene and you forget about it. You never think about it again, and then you go on to the next emotion or the next day or the next character.

"I almost feel like some of it has to do with the fact that I'm so used to just going, 'Done with that' and moving on that I don't even take it in."

"Even my real life, my real emotions."

Muniz said he also noticed this when he was driving race cars. While other drivers will talk about the race in detail, he will only remember two laps.

He first became interested in the sport more than 20 years ago when he was invited to drive the pace car for the Daytona 500.

Four years later he took part in the Toyota Pro Celebrity Race, and his racing career started from there.

He admitted during the podcast that injuries from racing probably contributed to his memory problems.

"It's not like I've got amnesia," he said. "[But] I have had nine concussions. That doesn't help."

He also admitted he struggled to remember episodes of the show that made him a star.

"I'll watch episodes and I'll be like, 'Whoa, I don't remember that episode. I don't remember what happens'," he said.

"Like, I should remember that, right? And I equate it to this, too: when you were in high school, in February of your sophomore year of high school, on the third week, what did you do? No clue. Nobody would know.

"But you remember certain things that happened in high school, like certain good things, bad things or highlights or whatever. That's my memory of Malcolm."

Muniz spoke about his memory problems with People in 2019.

"I only know what it's like to be me. Or have my brain," he said. "So, I'm only reminded of how bad my memory is when people I see, they come to me and go, 'Oh, you remember when we did this? Remember we went on this trip to this country?'

"And I have no recollection of it, but in my head, it's not like I feel bad or sad about it.

"I only know what it's like to be me and if I don't let it bother me, I just try to live the most fulfilling, best life I can. And I've got a lot in my life."

Muniz recently reunited with his Malcolm castmates for Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair – a four-episode 'revival miniseries' that premieres on April 10.
