The real reason Chappell Roan has been so 'controversial'
Since Chappell Roan catapulted to fame in 2024 with her song Good Luck Babe, not only has she been putting out certified pop hits, but the 28-year-old has also been creating a reputation for not putting up with people crossing her boundaries.
The world of celebrity runs on blurred lines, with stars expected to act both friendly with and above fans. It's a balancing act that many celebs fail at, often resulting in some sort of breakdown or scandal as they struggle to maintain boundaries with their fans.
But this is where Roan differs. She has been clear in her efforts to place and maintain boundaries from the very start of her career.
"I'm very turned off by the celebrity of it all," she declared in a September 2024 interview with The Guardian "Some girls have been in this so long that they're used to that, but I'm not that girl."
She has put these boundaries in place to protect both herself and her fans, but since this behaviour is very different from the established rules of celebrity culture, trying to create her own path has naturally landed her in some hot water.
Let's look back on some of the controversies she has been involved in over the years.
Calling fans 'entitled' and 'creepy'
Roan drew a line in the sand from the very beginning of her career, candidly sharing her disdain for the parasocial relationships between celebrities and fans.
"I don't care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous," she said in a TikTok video from August 2024.

"I don't care that it's normal. I don't care that this crazy type of behaviour comes along with the job, the career field I've chosen.
"That does not make it OK. That doesn't make it normal. That doesn't mean I want it. Doesn't mean that I like it. I don't," she declared.
"Whatever the f--k you think you're supposed to be entitled to whenever you see a celebrity. … I'm allowed to say no to creepy behaviour."
Red carpet altercation with photographer at the VMAs
During one of her first big award ceremonies, the Pink Pony Club singer was posing for the cameras when one photographer told her to "shut the f--k up".
She immediately called him out, pointing her finger up and saying, "You shut the f--k up. Don't! Not me, bitch."
The photo of her with pure contained rage in her eyes as she stared the photographer down went instantly viral, being one of the few instances where a celebrity has spoken up for themselves. Since that moment, we have seen a markedly higher amount of celebrities calling out people for their rude behaviour, such as Teyana Taylor recently at the Oscars when a man "shoved" her, and Millie Bobby Brown to a photographer during Stranger Things promotions.
The singer later spoke about the incident in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, where she shared, "It's quite overwhelming and quite scary. … And I need to — I yelled back. I yelled back! You don't get to yell at me like that!" she said.
2024 Presidential election endorsement (or lack thereof)
In 2024, the US election was all anyone could talk about, but that wasn't the case for Chappell Roan. She didn't want to choose between then-Republican candidate Donald Trump, who was running against then-President Joe Biden and later then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
"I have so many issues with our government in every way. There are so many things that I would want to change. So I don't feel pressured to endorse someone," she said in a September 2024 video.
"There's problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote – vote small, vote for what's going on in your city."
Her neutral stance sparked backlash since she did not reveal where she stood politically on a personal level, which prompted her to make another one.
"Endorsing and voting are completely different," she explained, "I don't agree with a lot of what is going on with policies – obviously, f--k the policies of the right, but also f--k some of the policies on the left. That's why I can't endorse. That's why I can't put my entire name in my entire project behind one."
Roan shared that she would be voting for Harris, but that it ultimately did not matter who she endorsed or even if she did so.
"Actions speak louder than words … This is not me playing both sides. This is me questioning both sides because this is what we have in front of us."
"Voting is all we have right now in the system, and so I encourage it yet again: Vote for who in your mind is the best option for what we have because it's all we can do."
Nipple ring dress at 2026 Grammy Awards
When Chappell Roan arrived at the Grammy awards, she was covered conspicuously by a maroon cloak, in line with her signature medieval aesthetic.
But she soon shed it to reveal a jaw-dropping "topless" dress hung up only by nipple rings. The sight immediately launched thousands of articles and think pieces around the world, but the woman at the centre of the controversy was unbothered, and even found the reaction a little bit funny.
"Giggling because I don't even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit," she wrote on Instagram, "The look's actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will it's really fun and silly :D. Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!"
Ada Law incident
The latest and most polarising of Roan's controversies has been one in which it was claimed Roan inadvertently reduced an eleven-year-old girl to tears.
It all started when footballer Jorginho took to his Instagram stories on March 22, 2026, with a lengthy post calling out Roan.
Jorginho, real name Jorge Luiz Frello Filho, who plays as a defensive midfielder for Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Flamengo claimed that the singer made his stepdaughter – Ada Law, the daughter of singer Catherine Harding and her ex, A-lister Jude Law – cry after an incident at a hotel in Brazil.
The 34-year-old shared, "I went through a very upsetting situation with my family earlier today. My wife [singer Catherine Harding] is in São Paulo for Lollapalooza Brasil," where Roan was due to perform.
The athlete said she even hand-made a sign to cheer on Roan in anticipation of seeing her perform, sharing a photo of it in his post.
"By coincidence, they're staying at the same hotel as this artist," he said.
"During breakfast, the artist walked past their table. My daughter, like any child, recognised her, got excited, and just wanted to make sure it was really her," he said.
He said the young girl had only "walked past" the Hot To Go singer's table.
"The worst part is she didn't even approach her. She simply walked past the singer's table, looked to confirm it was her, smiled, and went back to sit with her mum. She didn't say anything, didn't ask for anything," he claimed.
"A large security guard came over to their table while they were still having breakfast and began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter, saying that she shouldn't allow my daughter to 'disrespect' or 'harass' other people."
The soccer star claimed the security guard said he would "file a complaint against them with the hotel" saying his daughter was "sitting there in tears."
"My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot," he added.
Jorginho cited his own experience as a footballer when claiming his daughter's behaviour was not violating Roan's "boundaries".
"It's sad to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans," he said.

"At the end of the day, they are the ones who build all of this."
"I sincerely hope this serves as a moment of reflection. No one should have to go through this, especially not a child," he said to Roan.
"WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION," he wrote.
Within hours of the post, the news had spread across the world, with people outraged that Roan's strong boundaries had allegedly not only hurt a fan, but a child fan at that.
The singer responded to the claims hours later in a video taken from bed, presumably after performing at the festival.
The 28-year-old American singer took to her own Instagram stories on Sunday and said: "I'm just gonna tell my half of the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard, who is not my personal security."
"I didn't even see a woman and a child, like, no one came up to me. No one bothered me. I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel, as well," she continued.
Roan explained she did not tell the security guard to "go up and talk" to the mother and daughter, who she later found out were Law's ex, Harding, and their daughter.
"I did not, [and] they did not come up to me. They weren't doing anything," she clarified.
"It's unfair for security to just assume someone doesn't have good intentions when they have no reason to believe because there's no action even taken, like, that's so not what I stand behind."
The Red Wine Supernova singer added, "I do not hate children, like that is crazy."
She finished the video by apologising to Harding and her daughter for the interaction with the security guard.
"I'm sorry to that mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you would do something and that if you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad," Roan said.
"You did not deserve that."
Hours after Roan's video, mum Harding shared her side of the story.
Sharing a video on her Instagram stories after getting "so many messages" about the situation, she shared, "I honestly didn't realise it would get this crazy.
Harding said a lot of people have been asking what really happened and was aware that Roan had responded too.
"I know that Chappell has responded saying it wasn't her security and she didn't do it," she said.
"So, 100 per cent this security guard was not a security guard of the hotel, that's what I can say."
"He looks after artists, so I don't know if he was her personal security guard but he was with her, that is all I know," she continued.
"Did she send him to do it? Again, I don't know. Look, I would like to hope not... but at the same time I think that you have a responsibility when you are a celebrity to make sure that the people who work for you and act on your behalf, are acting on your behalf."
Harding questioned if the security guard would have acted that way if he didn't have the authority to do it.
She also explained that when Ada went to see if it was really Roan, she had no phone or anything and didn't attempt to talk to her.
Harding added that when the security guard approached them he was intimidating and "scolded" them at their table while they were having breakfast.
She ended the video by saying that she hoped that Roan wasn't behind the security guard's actions but that was the end of it.
The singer has since doubled down on her stance when it comes to aggressive behaviour towards her fans.
In a new statement released on March 25, a spokesperson for the Femininomenon hitmaker shared that she has "zero tolerance" for "aggressive behaviour" towards her fans.
"Chappell was not aware of any interaction between this mother/daughter and a third-party security office," the rep said in the statement to the Daily Mail.
"She did not see them at breakfast in her hotel, as she said in her video. She did not direct her personal security or anyone on her team to interact with them."
The statement continued, "Chappell holds her own teams to the highest standards and has zero tolerance for any kind of aggressive behaviour towards her or her fans."
On March 26, the security guard at the centre of the scandal finally spoke out and put rumours to rest.
Pascal Duvier was alleged to have "aggressively confronted" 11-year-old Ada and her mother, Catherine Harding, at a hotel in Brazil shortly after the young fan passed by Roan's table.
Now, Duvier has issued an apology for the incident, which was said to have left the child "in tears."
Taking to Instagram, Duvier took full responsibility for what happened, but revealed that he was not a member of the pop singer's security team.
"I do not normally address online rumours, but the accusations currently circulating are false and constitute defamation," he wrote.
"I take full responsibility for the interactions on March 21st. I was at the hotel on behalf of another individual, and I was not part of the personal security team of Chappell Roan.
"The actions I took were not on behalf of Chappell Roan, her personal security team, her management, or any other individuals."
"My sole interaction with the mother was calm and with good intentions, and the outcome of the encounter is regretful," he continued.
