Speaking to PEOPLE, a 57-year-old Bono reflected on his enduring relationship with Mathes, admitting "not many grooms ultimately end up marrying the very first girl they ever kissed so many years later."

"She makes me feel complete knowing she will always be there beside me as partner, my best friend, and the love of my life," he continued.

"No matter what life brings us, we will always be safer and stronger together… and we are home."

The happy couple first met at Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in their teens, but their paths then diverged for a number of years before reconnecting in 2017.

Actor Chaz Bono (L) and Shara Blue Mathes attend the Beyond Fest Los Angeles Premiere of "Little Bites" at the Aero Theatre on October 03, 2024 in Santa Monica, California.

Per their Honeyfund website, the newlyweds plan to celebrate their marriage with a romantic Hawaii excursion.

Cher, 79, was seen looking on from the front row at The Hollywood Roosevelt hotel in Los Angeles for the "Hollywood Glam Formal" themed occasion.

Bono and Mathes share a close bond with the singer, having recently supported her during an appearance at Saban Theatre for promotion of Cher: The Memoir, Part 1.

Cher, meanwhile, has also been openly supportive of her son over the years, remaining his rock throughout his gender transition in 2008-2010.

Speaking about the process to CNN, she admitted initially it "wasn't easy."

"But you don't really lose them. They just are in a different shape," she said.

"We talked about [whether Bono was] transgender for many years. And [he] would say, 'No, I don't want to [transition].' And then he went and said, 'OK, I want to do this.'"

Bono, an actor and the first transgender person to appear on Dancing with the Stars, is now "so unbelievably happy," Cher added.
