Aussie stars Rose Byrne and Jacob Elordi have their hopes dashed at the 2026 BAFTA Awards

The 2026 British Academy of Film and Television Art Awards (BAFTAs) have just wrapped up for another year.

This year's event, held annually at London's Royal Festival Hall, saw several Aussies nominated for some major awards.

But unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be their night.

Jacob Elordi

There were three Aussies up to win big at the BAFTAs this year.

Rose Byrne was nominated for best lead actress for her critically acclaimed role in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You; Jacob Elordi was up for best supporting actor for his role as The Creature in Guillermo Del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein; and Fiona Crombie was nominated for best production design for her work on Hamnet.

Sadly for the Aussies watching along, each of our stars' hopes were dashed as Jessie Buckley took home best actress, Sean Penn won best supporting actor, and the team behind Frankenstein won best production design.

The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards are underway

For Byrne, this marked her first BAFTA nomination, and it was the third for Elordi, who was up for the rising star award in 2024 and best supporting actor for Saltburn that same year.

It's not all bad news, though!

Byrne and Elordi aren't leaving awards season empty-handed, and there's still hope for both of them – and Crombie – to win big.

Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne attend the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards at The Royal Festival Hall on February 22, 2026 in London, England.

Byrne took home her first ever Golden Globe back in January, when she was announced as the winner for best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy, beating out Amanda Seyfried, Emma Stone, Kate Hudson, Cynthia Erivo and Chase Infiniti.

The week prior, Elordi had won the Critics Choice award for best supporting actor, delivering potentially the most Aussie acceptance speech possible, the first words out of his mouth when he reached the microphone being, "bloody hell".

And of course, we haven't yet reached the pinnacle of awards season, with the Oscars set to take place on March 15 (March 16 here in Australia).

Fiona Crombie

Byrne, Elordi, and Crombie are each nominated in their respective categories, with fellow Aussie Nick Cave also nominated for Best Original Song for his work on the film Train Dreams.

While it's near impossible to make predictions this year with each awards ceremony throwing several spanners in the works, the one thing we are sure of is that we'll all be rooting for our Aussies!
