Tragic new details emerge of Rob and Michele Reiner's final moments as death certificates released

More devastating details have emerged about the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele following the release of their official death certificates. 

The documents, released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and seen by multiple US outlets, say Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, died within "minutes" of receiving "multiple sharp force injuries" inside their Los Angeles home on December 14.

It listed their cause of injury as being committed "with a knife, by another [person]".

Rob Reiner was first found at 3.45pm while Michele was discovered a minute later.

The death certificates also show they have since been cremated and their remains returned to their son Jake Reiner, 34.

The couple's daughter, Romy, 28, is reported to have discovered the deceased pair at their home and called the police. 

The couple's son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested and charged over the deaths.

He is facing two counts of first-degree murder and is currently in custody. He has not been granted bail.

In the weeks following the couple's deaths and Nick's arrest, local media reported that Nick was prescribed medication for schizophrenia before he allegedly killed his parents.

He had battled with drug addiction for years, starting at 15 – a fact he and his family were open about.

Nick appeared in court briefly on December 17, wearing a suicide prevention vest. He has not yet entered a plea.

Rob was a family man, a Hollywood icon and a staunch advocate for equal rights.

He played a part in bringing some of the most iconic Hollywood films to life, including When Harry Met Sally, The Story Of Us, This Is Spinal Tap, Misery and A Few Good Men.

As well as their own three children, Rob also shares his daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage.

In the wake of their parents' death, Jake and Romy shared a statement, writing: "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day.

"The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.

Rob Reiner made some of the most beloved movies of all time.

"They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

Nick's arraignment will continue on January 7.
