'Worst moment of my life': Gary Numan announces sudden death of his brother days after breaking down on stage

Just hours after breaking down on stage during a live performance in England, Gary Numan has announced the death of his younger brother John, 60.

"The last two days have been the hardest of my life. This is why," the English musician began an emotional statement on Instagram.

"My brother John died suddenly in the early hours of Saturday morning in Leeds, he was just 60 years old."

Numan says he had spent the evening with his younger brother, wrapping up their time together just moments before his death.

"He had spent the evening with me at my Telekon show, catching up, swapping stories, telling me about his newly found love of reading ... We were just enjoying being together again as we see each other so rarely these days," he wrote.

Numan explained that the pair "talked for hours before and after the show" before eventually saying goodbye late in the night.

"I hugged him at the door of our tour bus, I think it was about 12:20am, asked him how far he had to walk to get to his car (I always worried about him walking the streets at night), it was not far apparently, we said goodbye and I watched him walk away," Numan continued.

Little did he know that would be the last time he would see his brother alive.

"Sadly he never made it to his car, betrayed by his own heart," Numan continued.

"It will haunt me forever that we may have driven off not knowing that he was lying in a rainy street just yards away.

"Luckily a kind person saw him and called an ambulance, but it was too late."

Numan stressed that his post was "not a tribute to John" as he "can barely think straight enough to find the words for this let along a fitting and deserving tribute to someone I love more than the world, those words will come in time".

Instead, Numan revealed that the post was to "explain why [he's] struggling" as he continues his tour.

Numan began the 45th Anniversary Tour of his album Telekon early this month. He has shows scheduled until Wednesday 3 December.

Despite his grief, Numan has endeavoured to continue with his tour.

"We are continuing with the tour because my Dad thinks I should, because John's lovely wife said John would want me to," he continued in his post.

"I have no capacity at the moment to make decisions of any kind. I'm drifting, broken, shell shocked, just watching one foot fall in front of the other.

"The emotion overwhelms and then backs away, it screams and then whispers. This is the worst moment of my life and I have no idea what to do, other than to continue doing the only thing I know how to do, the thing John was always so proud of.

"He loved Telekon. He was only 15 when I made it. So this tour is no longer a celebration of an album, it's a tribute to John, my brother, the best brother a man could ever have."

The day after his brother died, the musician took to the stage at the O2 Academy in Birmingham and left fans concerned when he broke down in tears while performing his song Please Push No More.

His wife Gemma O'Neil rushed on stage to comfort him.

He then reportedly told the crowd he'd received the "worst news ever" that morning and would tell fans in due course once he had processed the news himself.

He proceeded to attend his next show in Bristol but had cancelled the meet and greet he had planned beforehand.
