The one vow Ethan Hawke made to his kids after public Uma Thurman divorce
Ethan Hawke has revealed the one vow he made to his and ex-wife Uma Thurman's kids after their public divorce.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times in a recently published article, the Dead Poets Society star was asked about what it was like to have his divorce dissected in the public eye.
Hawke went on to reveal that he was hesitant to speak about the split, even 20 years on, as he made one vow to the two kids he shares with Thurman – Maya Hawke, 27, and Levon Hawke, 23.
"I can't really talk about this because I vowed to my kids so many times not to talk about the divorce in public," he told the publication.
"But one thing I will say is if you get the privilege of travelling the world, you realise that everywhere men and women have a tremendous amount of difficulty staying married."
As to the intensity of navigating a split under the spotlight, Hawke admitted it was challenging but the most challenging part was what goes on in private.
"The public eye is like gasoline," he said.

"But what makes divorce hard is the stuff that makes it hard for everyone – the family elements, how to help the kids through it.
"I'm so envious of people who have amicable splits."
Hawke and Thurman were one of the biggest power couples in Hollywood in the late '90s and early noughties before they split in 2003.
The couple were married in 1998 and finalised their divorce seven years later in 2005.
Their split was surrounded by reports that Hawke had cheated on Thurman with the children's nanny, Ryan Shawhughes.
Hawke vehemently denied the claims at the time but as soon as he finalised his divorce with Thurman, he started publicly dating Shawhughes. They went on to marry in 2008 and welcomed two daughters, Indiana, 14, and Clementine, 17.
Speaking to The Guardian he insisted his "marriage disintegrated due to many pressures".
While he's kept relatively silent on the split from Thurman over the years, Hawke recently opened up about the public breakup.
"It's humiliating. It's almost humiliating even when they're saying positive things," Hawke, 54, said of the news coverage of his split.
