SDFC wins inaugural MLS match, spoiling L.A. Galaxy championship party

San Diego FC Shocks Defending Champions LA Galaxy in Historic MLS Debut

San Diego FC couldn’t have asked for a tougher start to their Major League Soccer journey. Their first-ever match was set on the road against the reigning MLS Cup champions, LA Galaxy, who were raising their championship banner in front of a home crowd at Dignity Health Sports Park. A daunting challenge for any expansion team—but SDFC rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion.

A Historic First Win
SDFC made history with a 2-0 upset, led by Anders Dreyer, who scored the club’s first-ever goal in the 52nd minute. The moment was set up perfectly by Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, the club’s first Designated Player, who controlled a loose ball in the Galaxy box and quickly set up Dreyer, their second DP, for the historic strike.

From there, San Diego locked down defensively, with goalkeeper CJ dos Santos making a crucial point-blank save to keep the lead intact.

Dreyer Seals the Deal
In stoppage time, Dreyer struck again, delivering the knockout blow with a perfect chip off the crossbar and into the net, securing SDFC’s first victory in franchise history.

Now, all eyes turn to March 1, when San Diego FC will play its highly anticipated home opener at Snapdragon Stadium against St. Louis City SC. If this debut was any indication, San Diego is ready to make waves in MLS.
